The Graduate Program in the Purdue University Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education prepares individuals for careers as formal and non-formal educators, professional communicators, and academicians. The department offers both master's and doctoral degree options.

YDAE graduate students develop knowledge and skills necessary to implement and evaluate educational strategies based on how people learn and make decisions in modern society. Through course work, mentoring and research, our students develop the following core skills and competencies:
- Ability to work effectively in workplaces and communities to accomplish goals in a professional, ethical manner
- Appreciation for social diversity, freedom of expression, and open, civil discussion of academic and professional issues
- Proficiency in program planning, such as organizing, delivering, and evaluating impact of educational programs
- Knowledge of teaching and learning, such as organizing and delivering content, developing curricula, and evaluating educational impact
- Awareness of the role and function of formal and informal communication systems in modern society
- Mastery of social science theory and research inquiry
- Ability to think critically about academic, disciplinary and social issues
