Welcome

Nanomaterials are manufactured materials that are less than 100 nanometers (nm) in size. Many materials manufactured on this very small scale have been found to hold very different physical properties from the same material made in more traditional ways. Nanomaterials are already being widely used in a number of applications and products and a great deal of research and development investment continues as scientists search for novel ways to use nanomaterials in medicine and consumer products.

What is ANE?

This goal of this website is to provide information about the project, Assessment of Nanomaterials in the Environment (ANE). The ANE project was one of the first research programs to investigate the interactions between nanoparticles and the environment. This work is being funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

A second goal of this website is to provide general information for secondary teachers and students. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), information about the ANE project, and resources for educators (geared to high school juniors/seniors and college freshmen/sophomores) are linked on the left.
